Hello welcome to Treasures of Ayurveda.

Panchakarma, Panchakarma, Panchakarma….. we had a lot about panchakarma now adays. Someone says panchakarma is massage, someone says panchakarma is vomitting , loose motion, procedure.

Not many know what is actual panchakarma?

So let’s understand in todys blog


PANCH means = FIVE and


Panchakarma means “Five procedure which Purification your body and Strengthening your body.

Five procedure of Purification of the body are

  • Vaman
  • Virechan
  • Basti
  • Nasya
  • Raktmokshan

And five procedure for Strengthening body are

  • Snehan
  • Swedan
  • Shirodhara
  • Nasya
  • Basti

Nasya and basti are included in both the Karmas. why ?

Because according to the oil, ghee or kadha use in nasya and basti, these procedures give either the benefit of purification or strengthening of body.

So let us first understand about Body Purification Panchakarma.

In today’s blog we are discuss about VAMAN and VIRECHAN.



Vaman and Virechan Panchkarma are of 15 days duration. The science behind vaman and virechan is that here your digestive system is use for purification. So during the procedure your digested system should be given a rest from everyday digestion procedure. Hence the mantra for these procedures is-

Mantra – Eating only that much food which is needed for survival.

This mantra you have to follow for 15 days. Let understand this concept with an example.Suppose if a machine is put on purification mode, then it’s main function should be stopped till the time it is getting cleaned up.

Same ways,when we want our body machine to be purified , then it’s main function of digestion should be given a break so that our body uses its digesting system for it’s own purification.


Procedure means Vidhi.

Vaman and Virechan Procedure is divided into 4 part.

  • Snehapan
  • Pradhan Karma
  • Sansarjan Kram
  • Apunarbhav Chikitsa

1. Snehapan :

Snehapan means to consume Medicated Ghee.

This Karma last for roughly 6 to 7 days.

In this Karma ,in the morning on empty stomach patient is given MEDICATED GHEE to consume in increasing order of quantity. i.e on first day you have to consume 4 teaspoon ghee , 2nd day 8 teaspoon, then 10, 12, 16 and so on.

When you consume Medicated Ghee and you don’t get burp of odour of the ghee that means ghee is digested. Then rest of the day you are advised to consume Moong dal Khichadi. i.e Rice and Moong Dal preparation whenever you feel hungry and whenever you feel thirsty you have to drink only Warm Water.

By consumeing ghee in large quantities the toxins of the body get’s Liquified.

Then after Snehapaan Snehan i.e.Massage and Swedan i.e. Steambath is done. Here the role of Snehan and Swedan can be explained with an example – When your are cleaning your house ,the dirt falls on the floor then you have to collect the dirt at one place first before you throw it out. In the same way when we are purifying the body, with snehapaan the toxins of the body are liquefied then first we have to bring it to one place and then throw them out through nearest way. This bringing of toxins from the extremities into the center of body before throwing them out is done by Snehan and Sweden. This is the role of massage and steam in this panchakarma procedure.

2. Pradhan Karma :

After snehapan , snehan and swedan procedures, the toxins come to the center of body, from there we have to throw them out through the nearest opening of the body.

If these toxins try to come out by vomitting , then kadhas are given to drink and vomiting is induced. This procedure of throwing out toxins from body by induced Vomitting is called as VAMAN

And if these toxins try to come out by loose motions , then tablets are given to induce loose motions . This procedure of throwing out toxins from body by induced Purgation is called VIRECHANA.

3. Sansarjan Kram :

This kram starts from 10th day of therapy and ends on 15th day. Sansarjan Kram means the order in which we have to start eating food after therapy. We slowly start from liquid diet then semi solid and finally solid normal diet. Vaman and Virechan Karma are as good as upvas i.e dieting as we eat very little food only khichadi during the therapy.So after finishing the therapy following the diet routine is very important.So this order beginning with light to digest food and then heavy to digest food is called Sansarjan Kram.

4. Apunarbhav chikitsa :

Apunarbhav chikitsa is a very unique form of chikitsa told by Ayurveda. Apunarbhav means Preventive medicine. This is advised so that the disease doesn’t recur. After Pradhan Karma (vaman and virechan) starts Apunarbhav chikitsa. In this therapy, such medicines and medicated ghee are given for next 15 days to one month which increases immunity.

What time of year should we do Vaman and Virechan?

In healthy people in Vasant hritu that is ruffly in March/ April one should get Vaman Karma done and in Sharad hritu that is ruffly in September/ October one should get Virechan Karma done. And does our disease they should consult Vaidya first and then according to the simiralities our disease they should get Vaman and aur Virechan Karma done.

So how will we know that we have to get Vaman Karma done and Virechan Karma Done. For that to you need to consult Vaidya properly.

The person who has cough prakruti and who are suffering from cough diseases, like cough, cold, Joint pain, Asthma, Diabetes, Thyroid, Skin diseases like Eczema, Soriasis they should good go for Vaman Panchakarma.

The people who are Pittah Prakruti and who are suffering from Pittah diseases, like recurrent Headache, Migraine, Acidity, Gases, Constipation, Infertility, Various Period problem such people should go for Virechan Panchakarma.

What are the benefits of vaman and Virechan?

1. The most important is Body purification.

2. Body strengthening.

3. Apunarbhav chikitsa that is your immunity increases.

So how many times in a year should we do Vaman and Virechan?

As we cleaner on once a year same bases you can get your body clean buy Vaman and Virechan after consulting a vaidya.

Why Does Ganapatiji Eat Modak and Not Chakali, Chiwda ? (Health Mantra – 09) Blog -47

Have you ever wondered why Ganapatiji eat only modak and not chakali chiwda ?

The question is very interesting so is the answer.

Ganapati festival comes before October heat. And as we have learnt in last blog – The science behind festivals i.e. festivals advice us what changes to do in diet and routine according season change to remain healthy.

Ganapati festival marks the season change from rainy season to summer season. In summer season if we eat fried food like chakali, chiwda then it leads to increasing thurst as well as Pittah in the body.

According to ayurveda, october is Pittah Prakop Kaal i.e. it increases lot of Pittah in the body and leads to Pittah diseases like headache, migraine, fissure, piles, acidity etc.

Ganapati festival advices us what diet changes to do in October to remain healthy.

These are have food which have Pittah Shamak properties that is eat “White, Watery, Sweet, Coconut and boiled food. “

All these qualities are there in Modak. So we offer modak to Ganapatiji as Prasad. Thus Modak symbolically tell us what diet changes to be made in October to remain healthy.

  • White – White means to eat food which in white in colour like milk, milk product like butter milk, curd, paneer, cheese, butter, rice.
  • Watery means juices, sharbats.
  • Sweet means all kind of sweets.
  • Coconut means coconut milk, coconut water, grated coconut, coconut curry.
  • Boiled food.

All these food are Pittah Shamak i.e. they balance Pittah in body and thus keep us healthy in October.

So now you know why ganpatiji eats Modak.

So follow Health Mantra advised by Ganapatiji to remain healthy in October that is

Eat White, Watery, Sweet, Coconut & boiled food.

गणपतीजी मोदक ही क्यों खाते है ? चकली, चिवडा क्यों नही खाते ? (आरोग्य मंत्र – ०९) Blog – 46

आपने कभी सोचा गणपती जी मोदक ही क्यों खाते है ? चकली चिवडा क्यों नही खाते ?

सवाल जितना दिलजस्प है, जवाब भी उतना ही दिलजस्प है।

गणपती अक्टूबर की गर्मी के पहले आते है। और जैसे हमने पिछले ब्लॉग मे जाना ।

त्यौहार हमे ऋतु के नुसार आहार-विहार में क्या बदलाव करने चाहिए यह सिखाते है।

गणपती के बाद अक्टूबर की गर्मी आती है। गर्मी मे हम अगर बेसन की तली हुए चीजे जैसे चकली, चिवडा खाए तो प्यास और शरीर मे पित्त बढता है।

आयुर्वेद के नुसार अक्टूबर पित्त प्रकोप का काल है । इसलिए अक्टूबर मे पित्त बढाने वाली चीजे खाने से हमे सिरदर्द, पाइल्स, फिशर (बवासीर), पेट खराब होना, एसिडिटी ऐसी बिमारिया होती है। इसलिए अक्टूबर मे निरोगी रहने के लिए क्या खाना चाहिए यह बताने के लिए गणपती का त्यौहार आता है।

गर्मी मे पित्त कम करने वाली चिजे खानी चाहिए । जैसे सफेद, मीठे, पानीयुक्त, नारियल युक्त और उबाले हुए पदार्थ।

यह सब गुण तो मोदक मे है।

इसलिए गणपती को हम मोदक प्रसाद मे चढाते है। क्योंकि मोदक हमे प्रतिकात्मक समझाते है की अक्टूबर मे निरोगी रहने के लिए यह गुणवाले पदार्थ खाने चाहिए।

  • सफेद पदार्थ याने दूध, दही, छाछ, पनीर, चावल,
  • मीठे पदार्थ याने विविध पकवान्न,
  • पानीयुक्त याने अलग अलग तरह के शरबत, ज्यूस,
  • नारियल युक्त पदार्थ याने नारियल का दूध,नारियल का पानी, नारियल की करी और
  • उबाली हुई चीजों का हमे सेवन करना चाहिए।

आज आपने जाना की गणपती जी मोदक क्यों खाते है।

गणपती जी ने बताया हुआ आरोग्य मंत्र है।

अक्टूबर मे निरोगी रहने के लिए सफेद, मीठे, पानीयुक्त, नारियल युक्त और उबाले हुई पदार्थ खाने चाहिए।

अक्टूबर का इम्युनिटी बूस्टर – नारियल भाग-१ इस ब्लॉग मे हमने जाना की नारियल आकाश मे उत्पन्न होता है| इसलिए उसमे आकाश तत्व की अधिकता होती है| और इसी कारन नारियल शरीर के आकाशतत्व वाले अवयव जैसे सिर, कान, पेट इनपर अच्छा काम करता है|

पिछले ब्लॉग मे हमने जाना की नारियल सिर और कान पर कैसे गुणकारी है और आज के ब्लॉग मे हम जानेंगे की नारियल ये पेट के लिए कैसे गुणकारी है|

नारियल सफ़ेद रंग का पानियुक्त और फाइबरयुक्त होता है| इसलिए वह शरीर मे पित्त और पानी के अंश को संतुलित रखता है |

इसलिए अक्तूबर मे नारियल का ३ तरह से सेवन करना चाहिए |

  • अख्खा नारियल
  • नारियल का पानी
  • नारियल का दूध

1. अख्खा नारियल –अक्खे नारियल को पीसकर हर रोज खाने मे इस्तमाल करना चाहिए| क्यूकी नारियल मे फाइबर का प्रमाण अच्छे अंश मे होता है|पिसा हुआ नारियल हम खाने मे इस्तमाल करेंगे तो हमारे शरीर मे कोलेस्ट्रॉल, ट्राइग्लिसराइड आदि (cholesterol, Triglyceride) नही बढेगे|

लेकिन नारियल का तेल निकाल कर उस तेल को हम आहार मे सेवन करेंगे तो वह शरीर में खून मे जमने लगेगा और फिर हमे कोलेस्ट्रॉल, ट्राइग्लिसराइड(Cholesterol, Triglyceride) ऐसी अलग अलग बीमारीयां होने लगती है|

इसलिए अक्तूबर के गर्मी मे हमे खाने मे रोज पिसे हुए नारियल का सेवन करना चाहिए| इससे पचन अच्छा रहता है ,पेट साफ रहता है और कोलेस्ट्रॉल भी नही बढता|

2 . नारियल का पानी – अक्तूबर मे गर्मी और पसीने की वजह से शरीर मे पानी का अंश कम / असंतुलित हो जाता है|इसलिए हमे सिरदर्द, जुलाब, पिशाब मे जलन ,माइग्रेन जैसी बीमारियां होने लगती है| यह बीमारियां न हो या फिर यह बीमारिया होने पर आयुर्वेद मे बताया है की पके हुए नारियल के पानी का सेवन करना चाहिए|

आयुर्वेद के अनुसार कौनसा भी कच्चा फल नही खाना चाहिए|

इसलिए कच्चा नारियल जिसको हम शहाळ बोलते है उसका पानी हजम करने के लिए बहुत भारी होता है|इसलिए आयुर्वेद के नुसार शहाळ याने कच्चे नारियल का पानी नही पीना चाहिए|

पके हुए नारियल मे इलेक्ट्रोलाइट बहुत अच्छी मात्रा मे होते है| इसलिए अगर हम पके हुए नारियल के पानी का सेवन करते है तो गर्मी मे शरीर का पानी और इलेक्ट्रोलाइट संतुलित रहता है और हम बीमार नही पड़ते |

3. नारियल का दूध नारियल का दूध शीत और पित्तशामक होता है| इसलिए हर रोज के अलग अलग खाने के रेसेपी मे नारियल के दूध का करी, सोलकढी ऐसे विविध तरीके से इस्तमाल करना चाहिए |

इस तरह अक्तूबर की गर्मी से बचने के लिए नारियल का हमे विविध तरह से उपयोग करना चाहिए|

  • रोज सुबह खाली पेट नारियल, किशमिश और शक्कर खानी चाहिए|
  • नारियल का दूध नारियल का दूध और नारियल के पानी का सेवन करना चाहिए |और वैसे भी गणपती मे बताया ही है की मोदक खाओ क्यूंकि वह भी नारियल से बनते है

इस प्रकार से अक्टूबर का इम्युनिटी बूस्टर नारियल रोज खाओ और निरोगी रहो|

Immunity Booster For October – Coconut (Part – 2) (Home Remedy No – 07) Blog – 44

In our last blog October Immunity booster – COCONUT (part – 1) we learnt that Coconut grows in “Aakash Mahabhuts” i.e. space so it has more constituents of “Aakash Mahabhut” and so it works extremely good or works wonders on parts of the body which have dominance of “Aakaash mahabhut”. These are HEAD, EAR, INTESTINES and BLADDER.

In last blog we learnt about benefits of coconut for HEAD and EAR. In this blog we are learning how coconut is beneficial for INTESTINE and BLADDER? 

Coconut is white in colour and has good content of fiber and water. So it balances Pittah and water in body .

So in October heat we should eat coconut in 3 forms.


1. GRATED COCONUT – Start eating coconut in meals every day. Coconut has high fiber content so it doesn’t increase cholesterol and triglyceride if it is eaten along with fibers i.e. in raw form. But when we start extracting oil from it and use oil in cooking then it accumulates in the blood and so our cholesterol , trigylceides and other lipids start increasing.

So in October start eating raw form grated coconut in diet, as it’s high fiber content helps in digestion and keeps bowel movement good .

2. COCONUT WATER – In october ,due to heat and alot of sweating the water electrolyte balance in body gets disturbed and we fall sick with Loose Motion, Acidity, Urine Burning, Migraine, Headache and number of diseases. So to prevent diseases or to cure them ayurveda advices that we should drink coconut water of ripe coconut. 

Ayurveda says that no fruit should be eaten in raw form.

So Ayurveda doesn’t advise drinking coconut water of unripe coconut which we get on streets.

So in october we should consume coconut water of ripe coconut everyday. It has good balance of electrolytes in it so it maintains water and electrolyte equilibrium in our body and we remain Healthy.

3. COCONUT MILK – Coconut milk is coolant and balances Pittah in body. So we should be consumed Coconut milk in different recepies like Solkadhi, different curries etc.

So guys now you know that to combact october heat we shuold use Coconut in diet in varied forms.

  • In morning on empty stomach consume grated coconut with raisins and sugar.
  • rink coconut water and coconut milk of ripe coconut everyday.

That is why it is told in Ganpati to start eating Modak beacause it is also made up of Coconut.     

So start eating October immunity booster – coconut everyday remain healthy.

Like today is Nagpanchami ……so is there any SCIENCE behind diet and routine advised on Nagpanchami.

Changes in season brings about changes in our body too but we don’t make changes in diet and routine according to change in season so we fall sick.

So how will we know what changes to make in diet and routine to remain Healthy even during season change?

Therefore our ‘Hrishis’ kept festivals during season change, and they advised what diet and routine to be followed during season change as diet and routine of that Festival.

Surprised…..to know …..that there science in our culture and festivals too?

So let’s understand What diet and routine is advised on Nagpanchami?

1. Upvaas – as rainy season is still going on.

2.Don’t Cut and Fry.

3. Milk – Pittah Shamak – Kheer, halwa

Upvaas – Our digestion is governed by sun’s clock.In rainy days as sun is covered with clouds most time of day so our digestive power (agni) is weak. If we eat heavy to digest food then we tend to fall sick.So UPAVAAS is advised.

Do do not CUT and FRY– According to Ayurveda September and October is Pittah prakop Kaal means Pittah is  going to increases alot in these month. So as a prevention we are advised to slowly stop eating fried food advised in rainy season.

Milk – Milk we offer to Nagdevta which Symbolically initiates us to start consuming white things as white colour is pittah shamak ie it reduces pittah.

So all things advised on Nagpanchmi are Preventive measures againts october heat .

So our Health Mantra – 05 is

“Start eating white things, do upvaas and reduce eating fried food.”

The diet advised on one festival is not only for that day but that diet and routine should be followed from that festival till next festival.
So follow changes advised on festivals and remain HEALTHY

How to do fasting? (HEALTH MANTRA – 04) BLOG – 32

In last blog we learnt the meaning of upwaas , UP means- inside and VAAS means – to go.

UPVAAS means “To go inside ourself and meditate on internal power/atma/ god .”

So the real motive of upvaas is “to achieve mental peace by meditation”.

During Upavaas along with mental peace body  peace should also be achieved.

Body peace means giving a break to your digestive system so that it does its pending work, purifies itself and gets revived.

Same ways like how we take a weekly break to do our pending work and get relaxed.

Ayurveda calls it “Langhan”. Langhan means not eating anyting the whole day.

Due to langhan our digestive system which is working continuously gets a break.

But most of us can’t do langhan so you should at least eat light food on the day of fasting .

But we make variety of upvaas receipes  and eat double .

                 Ekadashi  Dupaat khashi

i.e. instead of giving break to digestion we give it double work .

So instead of health we end up in all kinds of PITTAH diseases like acidity, pain in abdomen, headache etc.

So our Health Mantra – 04 is – “How to do upvaas?

On day of upvaas we should not eat things which increase PITTAH but you will say khichadi is advised in upwaas …….No , Not Khichadi…..Sabudaana is advised in upwaas .

Sabudana is white in colour , anything which is white is coolant ,it never increases pittah.

So,the real culprit of acidity during upavaas is groundnut and green chillies which we put in in khichadi.

They increases pittah and eating khichadi on empty stomach whole day further by evening or next next day causes all pittha diseases .

So on day of fasting we should eat light food as well food which decrease PITTAH like sabudaana kheer, milk and fruits. They nourish  our body , are light to digest and decrease PITTAHas well.

So answer to – How to do upvaas is .

  • Do meditation as much time possible
  • Eat light food
  • Eat PITTAH shamak food ie food which decreases pittah .

So science behind upvaas is “ Give break to digestion and meditate”.


Like how we take Sunday off ….do our pending work, cleaning and relax so that we become refreshed for next week work.

Sameways ,we should give our mind and body a break so that they get purified ,revived and ready to work the next week .

So lets start fasting scientifically atleast once a week.
